What's the Difference Between a Product and a Listing?

Category: Products & ListingsLast updated: 9/2/2026

A product is your master copy in Indexync, holding one shared set of details: name, description, images, video, dimensions, and variations with their prices. A listing is that product's live copy on one connected marketplace store, on Shopee, Lazada, TikTok Shop, or Shopify. Edit the product once, and every listing updates to match, so you never maintain the same item four times. Any listing can also override specific details for its own marketplace, like a different name or price.

Applies to: All plans.

Products vs listings

Product (master values)
├── Listing: Shopee, My Store
├── Listing: Lazada, Main Account
├── Listing: Shopify, Online Store
└── Listing: TikTok, Shop Account

A listing exists only where you choose to publish. You don't need one on every marketplace.

Example: you sell a "Blue T-Shirt" master product. On Shopee you have a Singapore listing at S$22. On Lazada you have a Thailand listing at THB 580 with a Thai description. Same master product, two listings, each with its own marketplace details.

What follows the product automatically, and what doesn't

Each listing starts out following the master product for these fields: product name, description, images, video, dimensions, and price. Change any of them on the product, and every listing that hasn't overridden that field updates to match.

  • A listing can override any of those fields for itself, plus SKU images. Set a different name, description, images, video, price, or SKU images on one listing, and that field stops following the master until you switch it back.
  • Marketplace category and channel-specific attributes are always set per listing. They have no master value to inherit, because they only make sense on that one marketplace.

Example: you raise your master price from S$20 to S$25. Every listing still following it updates to S$25; one already set to a fixed S$18 promo price stays at S$18 until you change it or switch it back.

Seeing sync status on the Products page

Each connected marketplace gets one label on the product card, showing a count of how many of your connected stores on that marketplace already have this product.

What you see on the product cardWhat it means
Coverage label showing 1 with no plus badgePublished to every connected store there. Click the label to open the listing (not available for TikTok, which has no listing-view link).
Coverage label showing 1 with a green plus badgeNot yet published to every connected store on that marketplace. Click the label to Quick Sync it to the store(s) still missing it.
Coverage label showing 0 with a dimmed icon and a green plus badgeNot published to that marketplace at all yet, though at least one store there is connected. Click the label to Quick Sync it.
Empty cell, no coverage label shownNo store there is connected, and there's no listing left over either.

Troubleshooting

I edited the product, but one listing didn't change

That field on that listing is set to override the master, so it no longer follows product-level edits. Open the listing and switch the field back to follow the master, or edit it directly.

A product isn't showing on a marketplace I'm connected to

It hasn't been published there yet. On the Products page, click that marketplace's "+" coverage label to Quick Sync it, or open the product and tick the store in the Listings panel.

I can't tell if a listing follows the master or is overridden

On the Master Product tab, each overridable field (name, description, images, video, SKU images, dimensions) shows two labels: Master lists channels still following it, Custom lists channels that override it. Click Custom to see which listings differ and reset them.

FAQ

If I edit a product, does every listing change?

Only for the fields still following the master: name, description, images, video, dimensions, and price. A field a listing has overridden stays as you set it until you change it directly or switch it back to follow the master.

Can one listing differ from the product?

Yes. Any listing can override the name, description, images, video, SKU images, dimensions, or price for its own marketplace. Marketplace category and attributes are always set per listing, since they don't apply to the master product.

What happens to listings when I delete a product?

You choose. Deleting from Indexync only removes it from Indexync; your marketplace listings stay live and keep selling. You can also choose to delete the listings on the marketplace itself, which removes them there permanently and cannot be undone.

Do I need a listing on every marketplace?

No. A listing exists only where you publish. You can have a product live on some connected marketplaces and not others.

Where do imported items land, products or listings?

Importing creates a product and its first listing together. If you match the imported item to a product you already have instead, it becomes an additional listing under that existing product rather than a new one.
